Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after a week-long diplomatic mission that took him to New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and Germany for strategic bilateral meetings.
His arrival was recorded at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in the early hours of Thursday. Senior government officials were present to receive him warmly.
UNGA Address on Behalf of Tinubu
In New York, Shettima represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 80th UNGA session. He presented Nigeria’s position, calling for structural reforms in the global body to ensure Africa receives a more equitable voice.
He reiterated the continent’s ownership of its estimated $700 billion in natural resources and emphasized the importance of global partnerships that respect African sovereignty.
High-Level Engagements
Shettima held meetings with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who commended Nigeria’s aspiration to secure a permanent United Nations Security Council seat.
He promoted Nigeria’s $200 billion energy transition programme to international investors and reassured Nigerians in the diaspora of the government’s plans to integrate them into national development.
Strategic German Meetings
Following the New York engagements, Shettima proceeded to Germany, where he held additional high-level discussions aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s global economic and security partnerships.
His mission underscores Nigeria’s proactive approach in positioning itself as a leading voice in Africa and on the world stage.
