The Federal Government has expressed appreciation to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, for providing financial support to facilitate the return of distressed Nigerians from South Africa.
The government disclosed that 318 Nigerians had benefited from the church-funded evacuation arrangement, under which the RCCG pledged to pay for one-way flight tickets for 500 Nigerians facing difficulties in the southern African country.
With 318 beneficiaries accounted for, another 182 Nigerians are expected to benefit from the initiative as the evacuation exercise continues.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs commended the church for its intervention, noting that the financial assistance would help Nigerians seeking to return home from South Africa.
The Federal Government also reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with South African authorities and other relevant stakeholders to address xenophobia and Afrophobia, as well as improve the safety of Nigerians living in the country.
The ministry added that it would continue to pursue diplomatic engagements aimed at protecting the welfare, safety and dignity of Nigerians living abroad.
The initiative forms part of efforts to support distressed citizens in the diaspora and facilitate their safe return to Nigeria.
