The Federal Government has approved an increase in the feeding allowance allocated to members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during their orientation programme, with implementation expected to begin in 2027.
The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this while addressing members of the 2026 Batch C Stream One at the Cross River State orientation camp in Obubra.
According to Naija News, Nafiu said the government had approved an upward review of the feeding allocation and that the Budget Office had been informed ahead of its planned implementation next year.
However, the NYSC chief did not disclose the new amount approved for the feeding allowance.
Nafiu Advises Corps Members on Financial Discipline
During his address, Nafiu urged corps members to develop sound financial habits, avoid unnecessary spending and cultivate the habit of saving.
He said proper money management would help them during their service year and beyond, encouraging them to make wise financial decisions and use their resources responsibly.
NYSC DG Warns Against Night Travel
The director-general also cautioned corps members against taking unnecessary risks while travelling, advising them to avoid journeys after 6 p.m. and, where possible, continue their trips the following day.
He further warned them against resting in public places or sleeping in groups at filling stations, noting that such practices could make them easily identifiable.
“Refrain from resting in public places and avoid sleeping in groups at filling stations, as this makes you easily identifiable,” Nafiu said.
He advised corps members who felt threatened to seek safety at military installations, police stations or Department of State Services (DSS) offices and contact the NYSC hotline for assistance.
Nafiu also encouraged them to acquire practical skills that could improve their employment and income opportunities after service.
He specifically mentioned cosmetology, traditional hairstyling techniques and other vocational skills as areas corps members could explore.
The proposed increase in the orientation camp feeding allocation is expected to take effect in 2027, although the revised amount has not been announced.
