The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a decisive internal communication restating its leadership hierarchy and rejecting what it described as growing misinformation and unauthorised actions carried out in the movement’s name.
In the memo signed by IPOB’s Spokesperson and Media/Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group stressed that its founder and leader, Nnamdi Kanu, remains the undisputed authority within IPOB, insisting that his directives are binding on all members and structures of the organisation.
The statement noted that IPOB’s chain of command was deliberately established from the inception of the movement to ensure discipline and cohesion, particularly during periods of crisis. It reaffirmed that the Directorate of Media and Publicity is the sole channel authorised to issue official IPOB statements, warning that any communication released outside the office of the spokesperson should be treated as false.
According to the memo, Kanu personally appointed members of the Directorate of State (DOS), including appointments made while he was in detention, which IPOB said underscores the continued supremacy of his authority regardless of circumstance. The group maintained that no committee, faction, or online platform has the mandate to appoint officials, issue directives, or negotiate on behalf of the movement.
Clarifying recent developments in Anambra State, IPOB confirmed that the sit-at-home scheduled for Monday, February 2, is a single, non-recurring action, organised in response to what it described as intimidation of traders and residents by the administration of Governor Charles Soludo.
The organisation also dismissed reports of a purported secret meeting between individuals claiming to represent IPOB’s DOS and the Anambra State Government over events at Onitsha Main Market, stating that those involved neither represent IPOB nor speak for its leader.
Reiterating its ideological stance, IPOB said Kanu has consistently aligned himself with traders, artisans, and other ordinary citizens, stressing that no private meeting, inducement, or compromise can alter that position.
The memo concluded with a warning to dissenting voices, urging anyone unwilling to operate under Kanu’s leadership to disengage from the movement rather than create confusion under the IPOB name.
“For the avoidance of doubt,” the statement said, “the press statement on Monday’s sit-at-home was issued by me alone.”
The development is expected to sustain heightened political and security attention across the South-East as authorities and stakeholders monitor unfolding events.
