The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has moved to dispel fears over Ebola virus disease, declaring that no case has been detected in Nigeria.
In its latest public advisory, signed by Director-General Dr. Jide Idris, the agency explained that while outbreaks continue in parts of Central Africa, Nigeria remains free of the deadly infection. The statement outlined ongoing surveillance and partnerships with international bodies to prevent the virus from entering the country.
The NCDC highlighted that airports, seaports, and land borders are under strict watch, while hospitals across Nigeria are strengthening infection control. Health workers have been reminded to adhere to safety protocols in treating patients.
“There are no cases of Ebola virus disease in Nigeria, as of now. However, the NCDC, in collaboration with relevant Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and partners, continues to monitor disease occurrence and initiate measures to strengthen our preparedness in the country,” the agency confirmed.
The advisory also activated risk communication systems to counter misinformation and warned Nigerians to stay alert to symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, and unexplained bleeding, particularly among travelers from high-risk nations.
Recent figures from the Democratic Republic of Congo indicate 28 suspected cases and 16 deaths from the current Ebola outbreak. The NCDC reiterated that Nigerians should avoid unnecessary travel to affected countries.
The health body further urged the public to wash hands frequently, use sanitizers, avoid contact with fruit bats or undercooked meat, and report any suspected Ebola symptoms immediately.
