The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment rescheduled a high-level meeting on Monday intended to reconcile disputes between the Dangote Group and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).
Originally set for 3 p.m., the conciliation session was rescheduled to 10 a.m. by the Labour Minister, Muhammadu Dingyadi. However, leaders of NUPENG and other stakeholders were still stranded in Lagos at the time, making travel arrangements to Abuja.
A ministry insider explained that proceedings could not begin until the full delegation of union leaders and stakeholders arrived at the venue in Abuja.
The discussion was crucial, as it aimed to forestall the looming nationwide strike which experts warn could inflict serious harm on the economy.
NUPENG has openly accused Dangote Group of perpetuating “anti-union practices, a monopolistic agenda, and indecent industrial relations strategies.” According to the union, the refinery’s employment model involves low wages and prevents drivers of imported Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks from unionizing.
Union leaders argue that such practices directly violate provisions of the Nigerian Constitution, the Labour Act, and global labour standards under the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
