The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has criticised the Anambra State Government over reports that shops were sealed at the Onitsha Main Market following traders’ alleged failure to open their businesses on Mondays.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group described the alleged action as excessive and warned that punitive measures against traders could heighten tension and undermine public trust in government policies.
IPOB reiterated that its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has repeatedly called for an end to the sit-at-home and any violent enforcement linked to it. The organisation, however, maintained that individuals who still observe the exercise do so voluntarily based on personal beliefs and prevailing concerns.
According to the group, sealing traders’ shops amounts to collective punishment against citizens who have not been found guilty of any offence. IPOB argued that economic sanctions and intimidation would not restore normal business activities but could instead deepen resentment and fear among residents.
The group urged Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to immediately unseal all affected shops and adopt dialogue-driven measures to encourage business compliance while respecting citizens’ rights.
IPOB further emphasised its commitment to peaceful engagement and lawful conduct, calling on authorities to act with restraint and promote unity, healing, and respect for the rule of law.
As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Government had yet to issue an official response to the allegations surrounding the reported sealing of shops at the Onitsha Main Market.
