The Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s overseas vacation, stressing that Nigeria’s governance structure remains functional even when the president is away.
This came after Peter Obi, Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in 2023, criticized the president’s consistent foreign trips, suggesting they implied an unease with remaining in Nigeria during trying times.
In a statement, APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo lashed out at Obi for what he termed “opportunistic commentary.”
“Must Peter Obi comment on everything or anything?” Oladejo asked.
He clarified that the president remains fully connected with the nation’s security and intelligence architecture. “Let us be clear: President Tinubu, like any responsible leader, remains fully briefed and in active communication with his security and intelligence teams – even while on a brief vacation. Governance does not grind to a halt simply because a leader takes time to rest—especially in an age where secure, real-time communication is always within reach. Mr. Obi knows this.”
Oladejo argued that Obi was more focused on criticism than providing practical policy suggestions.
Tinubu began a 10-day leave on Thursday, part of his 2025 annual schedule, which the Presidency insisted was routine.
While the administration maintains that Tinubu’s travels are designed to strengthen Nigeria’s economy and bilateral relations, critics argue the trips signal neglect of urgent domestic concerns.
