Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, will take center stage at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York as he addresses global leaders during the high-level General Debate.
According to UN documents, Tinubu will speak on Wednesday, September 24, during the afternoon session at around 8:30 p.m. local time (2:30 p.m. in Nigeria). He is listed as the 17th speaker for the second day of the debate.
The debate will bring together leaders from 195 nations, including 98 heads of state, 44 heads of government, five vice presidents, four deputy prime ministers, 37 ministers, and other dignitaries.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil will traditionally open the debate, with United States President Donald Trump speaking second.
Movses Abelian, UN Under-Secretary-General, noted that the list could still change: “Please note that this list will continue to be updated until the start of the General Debate as changes are communicated by Member States.”
Nigeria’s position on the list reflects its international standing. In 2024, Vice President Kashim Shettima represented the country and secured Tinubu’s traditional speaking slot on the first day, a move widely praised among diplomats.
The overarching theme for this year’s debate is “Better Together: 80 years and more for peace, development, and human rights.”
The Assembly is presided over by Germany’s Annalena Baerbock, who urged countries to unite against global crises including poverty, war, and climate change.
