The hopes of the Nigeria national football team, popularly known as the Super Eagles, have been dealt a major blow following the injury of star forward Victor Osimhen during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda in Uyo.
Osimhen was substituted in the first half after a tough challenge from Claude Niyomugabo left him in visible discomfort. Without him, the Super Eagles still managed to secure a narrow 1-0 win, thanks to substitute Tolu Arokodare’s strike in the 51st minute.
Early reports from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) medical unit suggested that Osimhen had sustained only a shin bruise. Media Officer Promise Efoghe said in a statement:
“Team doctor confirmed Victor Osimhen’s injury is a bruise on his shin. He woke up this morning (Sunday) with discomfort and will not be travelling with the squad to South Africa for Tuesday’s game.”
However, further tests conducted in Istanbul by Galatasaray’s medical team revealed a more concerning situation. Dr. Yener Slim, the team doctor, disclosed via the club’s official website:
“In the examinations conducted today (Tuesday) on our football A team player Victor Osimhen in our hospital, a moderate level of sprain (tension and bleeding) was detected in the ankle ligaments and the necessary treatment was started to return to the field as soon as possible.”
The update means Osimhen will miss Nigeria’s next World Cup qualifying match against South Africa in Bloemfontein. His participation in Galatasaray’s weekend league clash with Eyüpspor also remains doubtful.
Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray in a record €75 million transfer from Napoli after a successful loan stint, has been in fine form with two goals in three league matches. His absence could be a big loss for both Nigeria and the Turkish club as competitions intensify.
