5 Sentenced To Jail ‘For Destroying Government’s Plants



 A northern court has sentenced five people to jail for vandalism.
    The accused were said to have allowed their goat destroy plants belonging to the government.

A Magistrate court sitting in Kano state has sentenced five people for environmental disturbance, amongst others.

According to reports, the accused, with their leader being one Usman Abdullahi were said to have let their goat roam freely, as they damaged decorative plants which was maintained by the state government.


This happened along Lodge Road and Race Course Road in Kano state.

According to the defendant, the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, which was led by Barrister Bahijjah H. Aliyu during the hearing noted that the crime contravenes the 2019 Kano State Public Health Law, which forbids actions that create environmental disturbances or deface public infrastructure.

These plants are not just for beautification, they are part of the state’s efforts to combat climate change and improve the quality of life for residents,” Barrister Aliyu told the court.

Delivering judgement, the Magistrate sentenced the five accused to a one month jail term, with an option of N25,000, and also a collective payment of

₦100,000 to compensate for the destruction of public greenery.
