The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the vandalism of public infrastructure in Abuja, vowing that they will face strict penalties. He emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing this rising issue of sabotage.
Speaking during a media chat on Channels Television on Sunday, Wike condemned the extensive damage caused by vandals, particularly the theft of cables and tampering with solar-powered streetlights, calling such acts "cruel" and a significant obstacle to Abuja’s development.
Referring to recent incidents of theft, including manhole covers and cables, Wike remarked:
“Look at this thing. It’s too cruel. Stealing cables for over 60 per cent of our land. Making everywhere dark. This is sabotage,” he said.
He also criticized public complacency regarding these crimes, stating:
“Some of us will see someone stealing cables or tampering with solar equipment and say nothing. You won’t report to the police. You’ll say, ‘It’s not my business.’ But when the city is dark, you’ll complain that the government isn’t doing anything.”
Wike reassured the public that security agencies would intensify their efforts to apprehend vandals, warning that those caught will face severe consequences.
“They will never come out free. We are going to deal with those who have the guts,” he stated firmly.
He further underscored the gravity of these offenses, declaring that such actions would be treated as economic sabotage.
“We will not charge you with stealing; we will charge you with economic sabotage. Enough is enough. Nobody who loves this country will accept what’s going on,” Wike asserted.
The Minister also expressed frustration with individuals who undermine government initiatives to improve infrastructure, accusing them of deliberate sabotage.
“Government spends money to make you comfortable and provide the necessary infrastructure. But some people will say, ‘Why allow this government to have a good name? Let’s sabotage them,’” he said.
Wike stressed the importance of community involvement in combating these crimes, highlighting that policing is not solely the responsibility of security agencies. He urged citizens to report suspicious activities and play an active role in securing the city.
While acknowledging the economic hardships faced by some, the Minister firmly rejected any justification for acts of vandalism, urging the public to prioritize the collective good over personal interests.
“Policing of communities is a shared responsibility,” Wike concluded, calling for greater public vigilance and cooperation.
